I’m a member if this Bay Area Jewish list serve that sends me ads a few times a day and most often they are seeking roommates or apartments. It just so happens to be that many of them are quite liberal and fun. The following is fun and liberal, but I always find them interesting because of the kosher stuff. Just thought I’d share the ad with you because it typifies (if that’s at all possible) a large quadrant of the Jewish and Jew-ish community of the Bay Area. Although I’m apart of the community below, I still find it interesting to observe them because it’s a cultural phenomena to find Jews doing some pretty darned strange things to feel, be or immerse themselves in Judaism.
Hello all!
I will be away from San Francisco this summer from June 15 to September 1 (with
some flexibility), and am looking for a lovely someone to rent my room during
that time (rent is $1000 per month).
I live in a *wonderful* cooperative home of 5 in NOPA (North of the Panhandle).
The neighborhood is pretty, trendy, and socio-economically diverse, relatively
quiet and centrally located — it takes about 10 minutes to bike downtown, and
it is a 5-10 minute walk to 3 glorious parks. It is also a few doors down from
a local coffee spot, a very compelling Mexican restaurant, and a community
acupuncture studio, and is two blocks from a main street with similar stores,
two yoga studios, etc., a 5 minute bike ride to the Haight district, and a
10-15 minute bike ride to the Mission. We are 4 blocks from the Wiggle, right
on an east-west bus line and two blocks from a north-south line.
Our cooperative is hechsher kosher and pescetarian. We buy food collectively,
and we each take a turn cooking for the house once per week. We also have
weekly chores, which take about 1 hour to complete each week. We are looking
for someone to sublet who will be excited and able to commit to being an active
member of this house by contributing equitably to cooking and cleaning.
Our house is on the top floor of a three-story Victorian. The available room is
medium-sized, beautiful and sunny with one north-facing window, hardwood
floors, and a decent-sized closet. The room would be unfurnished, unless you
prefer otherwise. The rest of the house includes a spacious and sunny eat-in
kitchen, and a medium-sized plant-filled living room with south-facing bay
windows, and a working gas fireplace. We have our own washer/dryer, and we have
one bathroom which includes a full shower/bath. Our back porch hosts our
lettuce and carrot plants and a table and chairs, and looks out over Twin
Peaks!
Your housemates this summer would be two women and two men (of various
spiritual/religious/areligious backgrounds). All are incredible people to share
a home with and generally inspiring individuals:
* J is a third-year medical student at UCSF, a tremendous cook and a lover of
yoga, and co-founder and co-director of a healthcare and community development
non-profit in Africa with her husband, A.
* A is a resident physician at UCSF and loves to play piano and bass and
celebrate Shabbat.
* S is a shining recent addition to SF after nine years in Nebraska and works
in the financial world.
* K is a brilliant communicator, loves yoga and meditation, and works to
distribute solar energy to the masses!
We are all in our late 20s to mid-30s.
We all value direct, loving communication, and spending time with each other
over dinner when time allows between our busy schedules. We are a smoke-free
household. Some members of the house enjoy limited amounts of alcohol. We
prefer to keep our shared space, particularly the kitchen, very clean and calm.
Let me know if you’re interested, have any questions, etc., and please pass
this on to anyone you think might be a good fit!
Thanks and be well,
