I find there are way to many judgmental people on this site. I love the comment that its way better to do stuff because its a commandment then finding the spiritual value in it. Doing it as a commandment is supposed to bring a sense of spirituality.

I also find that on this site, there are many poster that seem to have an air of moral and Jewish superiority about themselves, just because they label themselves Orthodox.

Each to their own, I guess.

Back to the chicken soup thing, the Rambam writes about eating chicken soup to increase potency and virility, especially in the winter time. My guess is that since Friday night is the opportune time for rabbis to make babies (Rambam hilchot ishut), the chassidim in Eastern Europe found it a perfect food for those long winter nights, in addition to helping theem keep warm (along with the fur hats and long beards) and save on heating bills.

Kids seeing their parents eating chicken soup for centuries has turned it into a quasi minhag.

As to why some Satmars end up so otd, reb Yoelish held anyone unlike them as "tmeim" or "shkutsim", as do many of his followers. I guess if you grow up feeling that you're one or both of the above, things can easily spiral downward very quickly.

Fakewood, I think you are way off with your numbers. You will be Surprised and shocked to hear how many kids in the hassidic communities are not religious. There might be 500 that are openly not religious. but there is another 5,000 that are secretly non religious. If you question those # let's go to willi town and see for ourselves. And to me it's Yoilish failed big time..... The prostitutes in Downtown Brooklyn don't say that there best clientele in Brooklyn are the Chassidim, for no reason. The biggest tax evasion is not going on in willi, BP and monroe for no reason. The Chassidic system is failing Hardcore.

Well, I do admire the conviction of any woman who wears a kippah, but I can't say that I'd ever do the same. Despite your intentions and genuine enthusiasm for Avodat Hashem, this particular action is almost certainly attributed to feminist folly. I think this might be a practice to leave at home if it brings you personal joy. Mostly, I think that there must be some sense to the halachot of a woman covering her hair only following marriage. I guess I just can't imagine feeling the need to be reminded of Hashem's presence by a kippah, especially in my skirt and long sleeves in the humidity of late August.

ah yes, the baseball field--sigh--I have some very fond memories of that one, my fave being when my friends Maze and Michal and I were running barefoot singing "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" by Steppenwolf (at the time I thought it was a Gov't Mule song). Where the Greenpoint girls would make me wonder how my ancestors possibly coexisted with those smokin' hot Polskies and didn't all go off just to get a piece of their sweet Babka. But in the words of my friend Yankee's dad, once they hit 30, that's when they begin to get fat. Indeed, several of my Eastern European friends, who are at least 7 on the I'd-Schtupp-Her scale, have mothers whom were probably equally as sizzlin' at their daughters when they were in their primes. Ah hell, some things are too good to last.

i hang out with the oisvarfs for the most part im not chareidi thats my connection to williamsburg. i been to the library and the baseball field to if you know what im talking about. I have been to the apts on the outskirts of willy where they all hang out. im not saying that they dont have people that go off. what i was saying is that out of the 10000 families maybe 500 kids went of thats damn good numbers for a religion. thats what reb yoel had in mind when he separated them. he also didnt seem to have a problem with people being miserable as long as they kept torah.

Since I'm involved with the local reggae scene, I'd considered trying to find a red, yellow, green kippa but then realized that only filthy hippie types wear those anyway so thats really off my list. Mostly I wear black knit with the white zebra stripes around the edge or a knit green with blue edge stripes. I like the green one best since it is "grippy" and doesnt blow off or fall off easily. I keep my hair very short so clips are out of the question.

I've been unemployed for over 6 months so its been no issue in daily life, most Japanese have no idea what a kippa is and seem to assume its just some little hat that some foreigners have. The question is what am I gonna do when I find a job since my particular thing is in corporate environments and most Japanese companies are very conservative regarding what men wear in the office. Even a plain dark color suede kippa would stand out here. Trying to explain to a Japanese manager or HR department that its a religious thing might not go very far since they are really not accustomed to such differences.

To address original topic:
I feel that the yarmulke has kind of become like Jewish Gang Colors. The type of yarmulke you wear identifies the denomination of Jew you are. The fact that I don't wear one is a statement that I've gone off the derech. Whatever halakha/minhag yisroel it may have been/still be, it's become a gang color of sorts. I've been through phases of wearing suede, dark blue velvet with my name on it, sruggies, big carlebachie ones with the colors of the Jamaican flag, big bukharian ones, the white doilies that Black Muslims wear, and even the white yerushalmi ones (like the Na Nach Nachma..., but sans the writing). I've only worn a black hat once when I was spending a shabbos with a Lubob friend (he lent me his spare), I was 14 at the time.

fakewood: so you've been to Monroe and Villiamsboig, but have you been to the part where the bars are at? Have you seen the rogue Yoillies who hide out in the safety of the bohosphere where they can drink/smoke/pick-up-shigtzas-to-cheat-on-their-wives-with? I lived half a year on the South Side of Williamsburg, an area that's within a 15 minute walk from the Lee/Marcy veldt, what my Savta from Boro Park calls "Bushwick". My area was mostly Hispanic, but sandwiched between the Polish and Italian neighborhoods, and at the time hadn't been taken over by the Yuppies yet (but they've made their way in now).

Yes, talk to the locals there, and boy do they have stories about the Hassidic Rebels. They may be Chassidic, but they're not as sheltered as we think. My favorite personal anecdote is the time one asked me if I'd like to "smoike a bloont"...while he was sitting there with a gemara on his lap. But that's not where it ends. Almost all of my non-Jewish friends from there have at least once had one trying to pick them up. And trust me, they're not smooth about it at all. From what I hear, they usually use a line like "excuse me, are you a prostitute?" or "I'm just looking for a non-Jew to have casual sex with."

Sure, Rav Yoillish was trying to keep them in line, but did he succeed? If you don't believe me, spend any Thurs. night up on the Bedford or Metropolitan strip in Villiamsboig, and I'm sure you'll see for yourself.

(provided you're being honest) how we learn to speak and write has a lot to do with the tone of what we write (intentionally or unintentionally). The native languages of our ancestors can influence our language usage today.

Ever hear someone put the subject at the end of a sentence?
Example: It's down the street, my car.
That person may be of yekke (German) descent. Language is a key to communication, as is choosing our words carefully.

--
hey, now; don't blame that on the Spanish. :)

"the problem is evryone wants to change the charedi community and they dont want to change. so stop judging them and follow your own thing and dont complain why they wont change or why they wont accept you."

No one in this thread is asking the charedi community to change. You're just picking on Gila for wearing a kippah crocheted for her in her own community. If you need a soapbox, please start a new thread, rather than baselessly attack people for doing what they do in their own community while not trying to change yours.

In other words, eat kreplach! I'm sorry you seem so unhappy. What's up? Why are you so unhappy? Being unhappy does not give you the right to rag on others, period.

The entire point of her blog is that Satmar has serious issues bubbling beneath the surface because they try desperately to keep up appearances at all costs. If you've only been on the periphery of the community, you've only seen its shiny veneer. I don't claim to have any firsthand experience either, but I see no reason to doubt Hasidic Feminist's account. Her blog is extremely detailed and she would have to be pretty deranged (not to mention creative) to make everything up for no reason.

"Like-minded" is not the same thing as "identical". Yes, people share common bonds, but these bonds are of a general, not a specific, nature. We might all be in agreement that Shabbat meals should be more festive than weekday meals, but it would be ridiculous to circulate a community bulletin dictating a particular menu.

That is in essence what happens in many Charedi communities, unfortunately. The difference is that expectations are unspoken rather than official, but one can get into a lot of trouble for deviating from the norm. And why? There's no practical or ideological reason why any of this petty stuff should matter.
