You realize that perfectly fundamentalist Christians hate the WBC as well; Jerry Falwell called Phelps a “first-class nut” and the Westboro Baptist Church protested at his funeral.

The closest comparison in Judaism would be Neturai Karta.

A Jewish guy shipwrecks on an island. He is the only person on that island. No other ship in sight anywhere. He knows he is far from civilization. So he figures he might as well build himself a Jewish community all by himself because he is going to be staying there for a long time before he gets rescued assuming he even gets rescued. Many years later a ship arrives at the island to rescuse the Jewish survivor. They land on the island and the Jew welcomes them. He shows them the city he build all by himself. Everyone is so amazed at his skill. The Jewish guy invites them to a shul that he build to daven to God for being rescued. But as the rescuerers are walking with the Jewish guy they see another shul a block down the road. So they ask the Jewish guy, “why would do you need two shuls?”. So he responds, “that is the shul I refuse to go to”. ^.^

Here is my explaination to why there are uncomfortable. The feeling of uncomfortableness is created by two conflicting ideas in the mind of a MO. The MO does not only base his life around religion, he has a non-religious life as well. The frummy puts his life around religion. The MO looks at the frummy and realizes that the frummy has a dark side to him. MO realize that frummies are anti-gay and anti-women, and anti a lot of things, anti a lot of things which the MO disagrees with the frummy. But at the same time the frummy is being consistent with Judaism. Everything the frummy says is exactly the way Judaism is supposed to be practiced. The frummy follows the Torah the way it is to be followed, the frummy treats halacha the way it is supposed to be treated from the ‘Sulchan Aruch’ and the ‘Mishneh Brura’. The MO does not. The MO has this own view of how Judaism has to be, his own view of what Jews should be doing. So what the MO does is wishful thinking. He comes up with what he likes and then tries to use Judaism to justifiy his believes. But deep down he knows he is not being honest, it is the frummy who is honest. This is why they get uncomfortable around frummies.

If any of you know Shirley Phelps then my explaination above would also explain why Christians are so uncomfortable around her. Shirley Phelps represents fundamentalist Christianisty the way it should be practiced. Moderate Christians practice Christianity in the way they want to practice it. When people like Shirley Phelps come along they make moderates feel extremely uncomfortable. Because the moderates realize that they are not being honest with Christianity.

This feeling of uncomfortable is a psychological results from cognitive dissonance within the MO. The frummy is not uncomfortable around the MO because the frummy has no cognitive dissonance.
