Can porn save shabbos?

shomer shabbosHey Hesh,

I have an interesting situation I thought I’d share with you. A friend of mine recently admitted to me that he breaks shabbos to look at porn on the internet. I was a bit shocked that someone could be so addicted to porn that he would break shabbos to fill his needs, but I looked around the web and apparently this addiction is no joke. I remember a few months ago when you wrote about how frum Jews were keeping the print porn industry alive and I was wondering if you think that it would be muttar to buy my friend porn magazines so that he doesn’t break shabbos.

I actually asked him why he hadn’t thought of it and he told me that he’s not sure that he can “get it up” for pictures anymore. Apparently he’s spent so many years watching internet porn that he’s desensitized to the old fashioned stuff we used to smuggle around yeshiva together.

Porn saves shabbos…

Dear Porn debate guy,

I hate to say it, but I would give you a heter just to try out your theory. Regardless, your friend is going to watch porn throughout the week, but it is our responsibility to keep his shabbos holy. Just because some Jews consider porn to lead to genocide, doesn’t mean it’s true. However, we do know that breaking shabbos is a definite death penalty and an underlying reason why many Jews marry out. When’s the last time watching porn caused Jews to marry goyim?

One may also argue that if he even looks at the magazine on shabbos, he has saved his shabbos for one second. That one second of shabbos being saved from internet usage may be worth infinite mitzvos, but we shall never know the true reward.

The fact is that porn can save shabbos.

Why should internet (or electricity) be breaking Sabbos? Because the rabbis deemed it so? The whole rabbinical understanding of keeping shabbos is all nonsense anyhow. For 6 days you shall work and rest on the 7th. There is nothing about melachos the way the rabbis “understand” it. It’s very basic! For 6 days earn your daily bread (work!) and rest on the 7th – i.e. enjoy it and appreciate that ultimately it comes from God and you work to live, not live to work. Come along some rabbis thousands of years later and they come up with juxtopositions and what nots. I cannot even separate the food on my plate on the shabbos according to rabbis. I was recently told by hareidim that if one takes a banana off a bunch then one should be put to death. Are they crazy? This is pure evil. How about one who doesn’t work at all through the week. Can they keep shabbos? Whats the issur of electricity? Electrons being fired generating a reaction. Better not think then, ones brain is firing electrons too. Hareidim are very safe in this aspect.

Don’t you understand, Hashem knows it’s less work for your wife if she washes the dishes in cold water rather than putting them in the dishwasher.

Hey Abe, don’t be a hater, be a lover.

  • Abe

Save love for those who deserve it. I cannot love someone who thinks that someone who breaks shabbos deserves death. That is just pure evil. Separate yourself from it. Speak up against it.

It is not hate to call out people who say people deserve death for nonsensical reasons. It is actually the opposite.

How sad it is that more people in the world don’t allow their lives to be dictated by the Torah. They wouldn’t need filth like this.

    • Abe

God’s creations aren’t filth. And you should hear what goes on in the communities who do follow the Torah far worse then those who aren’t frum.

      • Milhouse

        Give an example.

        • Abe

Give an example of what? God’s creations not being filth or hareidim having a worse reputation?…

Do you want names and addresses?

          • Milhouse

“And you should hear what goes on in the communities who do follow the Torah far worse then those who aren’t frum.”

Give an example. What’s so hard about that.

    • A. Nuran

Watch a film of a man and woman have consensual relations: Utterly depraved. Evil. Soul-destroying. Filth.

A man violates little children. Repeatedly: Oy, nebesh! He’s such a tzaddik! Give him another job working with children. Those antisemites what to put a good yid in prison! Collect money for his legal defense fund! Put his accuser in cherem and make sure nobody closer than third cousins ever has a good shidduch.

Maybe you’ll spend eternity boiling in your own yo-ho-ho for spilling seed over the first. But if your god really believes it’s worse than the second, the he, she or it could learn moral philosophy from a tapeworm.

  • Abe

I write the examples but they don’t get posted. What goes on in the frum community is too bad to print. I’ll try again…

    P..stitution
    Ab.. use
    Se..ual Misconduct
    Cover-ups

the non-frum, and non-jewish community also has all of that. you are just biased, so you choose to focus on the frum community’s issues. face the facts. we all have issues.

there are no mitzvot regarding whether poop is edible or when to wear tfillin on Mars because nobody does these things, just as courts do not render an opinion until they are asked to assess something that actually happened. All these forms of human activity occur in reality along with the entire Al Chait, even if you did not personally engage in them. They all appear somewhere in Torah, other parts of Tanach, and later commentaries suggesting that it takes more than Torah prohibition to make misconduct disappear, whether the community is frum or not. Where the divergence occurs seems to be when that misconduct becomes part of misrepresentation or genevas da as, people giving a form of marat ayin with the outward illusion of piety

i don’t really understand what you mean. The Torah forbids certain acts. That doesn’t mean there are Frum people who make mistakes. And that doesn’t mean that there are no people masquerading as being Frum doing the worst aveiros. Abe happens to be biased, so he looks at the Krummies, and decides that the entire Frum community is like that.

My point being is that Torah does not make you a better person and more atrocities have been done in the name of religion then anything else. Don’t think yourself better than ANYONE because you are frum.

          • Anonymous

Well, actually, more atrocities have been committed in the name of (largely atheistic) political ideology than anything else.
            Stalin
            Hitler
            Mao Tse-Tung
            Pol Pot
to name but a very few.

            • Abe

You’re gonna have to name a lot more then those few. Religion has been slaughtering people for millennia.

            • Please

Oh please. Read your Torah. G-d did much worse. No comparison.

            • A. Nuran

Stalin? Could have wiped out the Orthodox Church. Kept it alive with State funding.

Hitler? Strong supporter of the Church and vice versa. Remember “Gott Mit Uns”?

Mao? Considering China’s most recent brushes with Invisible Sky Friend – the Tai Ping Rebellion (killed more than Hitler plus a good chunk of Stalin), the Opium Wars, the Boxer Rebellion and so on – I can see why they stamp down hard on Western mythology whenever it pops up. Give them a bye.

Then there’s the horror of what monotheists did to the Americas with cultural and real genocide in at least the tens of millions, the wiping out of whole civilizations etc, the African slave trade (Thanks, Christians! Thanks, Muslims! Thanks, Jews!), the Inquisitions against the Cathars, Albigensians (“Kill them all. The Lord will know His own”) and Jews, the witch hunts, the Wars of the Spanish Succession, the extermination of Amalek and just about everyone else in Canaan. And, oh yeah, Good Christian King Leopold who enslaved, mutilated, tortured, starved and murdered more people than ‘Dolf ever dreamed of and without Teutonic efficiency.

There’s more, but you get the idea.

Religion has so much more blood on its hands than “atheism” that it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Please look at the bottom of page 8 in the online edition of mein kampf. Mentions how he is doing the will of The Lord or something.

Abe.. I pray to Hashem that in my next life I will not be born into a frum family

    • Abe

Amen to that. Forcing religion on a child is a form of abuse.

Jesus H Christ, people. That was a funny post. It was SATIRE and very welcome given that this blog has been way too serious lately. Doesn’t anyone reading fum satire appreciate SATIRE anymore? Why re-hash old arguments? Have they gotten more interesting? Are you going to convince someone?
