As a homo Jew, my review is ‘that looks kind of stupid’.
Just because you write characters and a script about yourself or your community, doesn’t mean you’re talented. (That goes for you too, Tyler Perry!)
I hate this Manishewitz Judaism. There’s nobody—from the most unaffiliated to the most Chasidish—that acts like they do in these depictions.
If people didn’t relate to this kind of Jewy stuff, you wouldn’t be seeing so much of it.
When it comes down to it, the orthodox community is a very small part of the Jewish community as a whole. I love this type of stuff and can relate to it as can many other people.
Heshy, is that you coming out of the closet?
It looks like the parents experience a transformation from rigid rejection to acceptance and understand – which is a story worth telling (despite the semi-cliched look of it). It’s obviously exaggerated and ridiculous. One of my favorite movies ever is “When Do We Eat?” – which has the same stylized Judaism with Manishewitz, Valium, and oys – but the characters grow and learn to appreciate each other.
Howz about this :”oy vey this movie is gay”
Stereotypes come “to life, lechaim.” Does the Jewish gay’s mother also have all her couches covered in plastic at her suburban Queens home?
Nice to see Vinnie (wife beater) Pastore, back on the screen, doing a film about family values.
Meh. Looks like a whole bunch of stereotypes, of gays and of Jews. All gay men are not swishy, just like all Jews are not New Jersey accented, neurotic mothers.
As a queer Jew, I say I’ll wait for the reviews first :/
“the hebrew hammer” is the biggest manischewitz judaism movie ever,
it is kind of funny, its parody of shaft for jews a “jewsploitation movie ”
its funny but the main character played by adam goldberg, has a scene with his shirt off, and he has tattoos all over him, but he is supossed to be so called orthodox which to me was a mess up on the part of the movie. i mean the whole movie is a blunder f and miss use of many many holy objects and its silly, corny and stereotypical— but i mean how elementary is having a tattoo and being an ffb? that is numero uno… its like him being orthodox and eating a big chazer…
Clearly the Hebrew Hammer isn’t completely orthodox if he is also going to engage in pre-marital sex, either.
I really enjoyed the Hebrew Hammer because it is over-the-top, and the jokes aren’t in a negative way, (as opposed to Adam Sandler, whose Hanukkah Song bothers me).
I just noticed the director of the film is a Russian Jew. While I disagree with the subject matter, I’m proud to see a zemlyak succeed.
He even got Boruch Villanch into the act.
Looks like an interesting movie. Can’t be worse then “The Tooth Fairy”.
The Rock would stop making cheesy kids films and go back to pro wrestling.
The reality is that most gay films are based off stereo types or situation that are not true to real life, come on the show “Queer as folk” like that show was based on reality. I actually saw this movie and it is funny because of stereo types and hits home to me when the family finds out the son is gay. It was almost exactly what happened to me when I came out to my family. I loved the film and I would recommend this movie for anyone that is still close to their family. All you little bitter bitches with daddy issues need not apply!
