Pardon my bringing up this major–and rather telling–detail, but I was under the impression that the women’s section is *part of* the main sanctuary. Thanks for the eviction notice. Not.

Last time I was at YI Hillcrest on a Shabbos morning I found it to be one of the noisest shuls I’ve ever been in. But that was before Hillcrest had several other minyans, so perhaps the talkers have spread out?

great shul, all of the talking is done in the back and since the shul is pretty big they are not very loud. the teen minyan is a great minyan at that shul, 9-10 45 including a short vort from the sephardi rabbi of the minyan no talking just davening. thats not even the first time a woman gave a vort after davening, its usually done b/t kabbalat shabbat and marriv but since it was a woman it was done after shul. and the man on the stage in the black hat was the rav of the shul, who is also a Dr. (the real kind) also there are two large women sections but friday night one of them is used for men. also usually just the rabbi and prez sit on the stage. its queens. noones buying stuff….

Thought you might be interested in knowing that despite referring to their “modern orthodox roots,” YI was actually founded by R. Mordecai Kaplan (ordained by JTS & a founder of Reconstructionist Judaism) and R. Israel Friedlander (professor at JTS). FWIW.
