Depends.
I admire people who make environmentally conscious decisions.
However I’m tired of the “Go Green” marketing campaign. It’s been labeled “greenwashing”.
I’m really sick of all those green people as well.
I think everyone should drive a Hummer, chop down every tree within 100 yards of their home, consume copious amounts of Chinese-made crap and dump all their garbage at the local beach, overfish every major body of water in the world, kill all those worthless caribou, and generally be as regressive, inefficient, and wasteful as you can possibly be.
After all, isn’t that what God put us on this earth for?
No, you most certainly aren’t.
Buzzwords are lame.
Apparently not!
I love that one!!!
Bank of America and AT&T keep asking me if I wanna go “paperless”.
Even though I do all my banking etc. online, since the button to end the paper mail always has something like “go green/save the planet” I refuse to click it.
If they would just say “Save the mess” or “helps us save money” I would do it – no problem.
Im just sick of people trying to cash on this, specially since its all BS.
The only green they are looking for is the $ green.
Al gore can go…
I agree with Zalman. I hate when companies use “go green,” as if they aren’t benefiting from it also. What about when they need to shell out bucks to help? Sudden silence, unless they can get good enough press.
I think you should get used to Go Green. I don’t see it going away any time soon. Maybe you can do some hypnosis so when you see “Go Green” your brain registers “Go Camping” or something more FS-friendly.
theres a few things that drive me mad about going green.
1. green lobbyists lobby for green power, but against nuclear which is by far the greenest baseload energy
2. they drive priuses, but anyone with a brain knows that a small european car, especially a diesel will get better milage. A little VW golf deisel uses less gas and is a million times faster, more fun, more spacious
3. they claim that global warming is scientific fact, which i dont mind execpt that there is not one single iota of actual proof
4. everytime theres a hot day, or cold day, or storm, or natural phenomena, some retard comes out and blames global warming
5. they equate green-ness to organic foods and vegetarianism, which is just stupid.
6.Every time a single species goes extinct its the end of the world … wake up species go extinct by themselves all the time … it makes no difference to anything.
I’m all for smart green stuff, like shai agassis electric vehicle vision is phenominal, or using algea to turn CO2 from powerplant stacks into oil … As a general rule, if an environmentalist says something its probably not good for the environment
I hate going green, I hate people who buy “eco-friendly” paper, eco friendly paper is crap. I want that 20% more plastic in my water bottle. I hate when they say were killing the environment the environment is far from being killed anytime soon. No youre not the only one.
Another thing is, they actually tried to make chanukah a jewish holiday of saving energy because g-d made one pitcher of oil last eight days and nights. I made fun of this with a post of mine http://mikeinmidwood.blogspot.com/2008/12/go-green-with-chanukah.html
I agree with “totally with you”. You inspired me to blog about it, Hesh, thanks!
1. green lobbyists lobby for green power, but against nuclear which is by far the greenest baseload energy
There’s that one tiny little problem of disposing of nuclear waste, which lasts for thousands of years. Although the operation of nuclear power plants is generally safe I think a lot people aren’t keen on risking Seven Mile Island or Chernobyl happening again.
5. they equate green-ness to organic foods and vegetarianism, which is just stupid.
No it’s not. Food being grown with fewer chemicals means chemicals getting into our water through runoff. If less people ate meat there would be less deforestation; deforestation means quicker erosion of land, leading to desertification, without topsoil (which takes about 1000 years for an inch to be made) no plants can grow on the land. Rain forests produce a lot of oxygen for our environment and are home almost half of the Earth’s living species, including roughly 1/3 of the worlds medicine, but we lose several acres a day for cattle grazing (and soy bean plantations). Also it takes 390 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, compared to 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. 7 pounds of grains or soybeans are needed to produce a pound of beef. If a significant amount of people stopped eating meat we’d be using our land and resources much more efficiently!
I don’t judge people who eat meat, if I did I’d be a very lonely person, but they need to stop pretending that excess meat consumption isn’t hurting the environment!
6.Every time a single species goes extinct its the end of the world … wake up species go extinct by themselves all the time … it makes no difference to anything.
Yes some species, like the dodo go extinct by themselves but you’d have to be an idiot to deny that humans have made many animals endangered by destroying their habitats and over hunting them. Species going extinct through human cause can mess up an entire ecosystem.
The concept of going green is good; the concept being co-opted by corporations sucks, happens to most things sooner or later though.
There’s that one tiny little problem of disposing of nuclear waste, which lasts for thousands of years. Although the operation of nuclear power plants is generally safe I think a lot people aren’t keen on risking Seven Mile Island or Chernobyl happening again.
that would be three mile island not seven and there are risks in every facet of life. Nuclear power is safe. You can have major disasters with conventional power plants as well. True enough Chernobyl was magnitudes greater but if we continue using coal to produce electricity we will eventually deplete the resources. And before you say use wind or solar the cost is not effective to produce the demand that is needed to sustain.
Sorry, I think I was listening to Jason Isbell when I typed out Seven Mile Island, rather Than Three.
Wind and solar power would need to be supplemented with a centralized energy source, especially in urban areas, wind and solar shouldn’t be written off completely. Decentralized power would work excellently in rural areas and low-medium density suburbs. Nuclear power will most likely need to be used to phase out fossil fuels, but countries are still trying to sort out long term disposal of nuclear waste from the arms race of the Cold War. We need to figure out solutions for what to do with the waste before the US begins mass conversion to nuclear power.
Um, the dodo was hunted to extinction within a few years of their discovery by (I think) the Dutch. They were big, slow, flightless birds that inhabited a single island and apperently were pretty tasty.
To name some foods “organic” is kind of silly. As opposed to what, all the inorganic food we eat? Anyway, organic food isn’t grown without chemicals. Its grown without industrially produced chemicals, which means that organic farmers use inefficiant chemical sources, like manure, for fertilizer. It also means that they produce less per acre increasing land use while reducing actual yield. And the produce is either equal or inferior to industrial farming. The reason organic food has a reputation as being better is mostly a placebo effect.
compulsive hand washer, I dont blame you for your views, but they an unfortunate side-effect of growing up in america these days. scientists will disagree with you for the reasons below.
1. a 3 bedroom house, powered for 70 years from a nuclear produces a single teaspoon of highly radioactive waste. Coal and deisel ones spew out huge plumes of hydrocarbons, coal is laced with radioactive isotopes which goes straight into the atmostphere.
With a nuclear plant, there is absolutely no co2 and all the nuclear waste is completely contained. This waste can be sealed completely and buried or re-refined to become nuclear fuel all over again.
Nuclear meltdown is completely impossible with current-gen power plants, the older ones were setup to be super-hot and then cooled by rods, current designs never allow enough fuel together to come anywhere near the point of meltdown … if the plant fails, it just cools down.
5. organic produce, does use pesticides … the only difference is that the pesticides they use are “natural”, which actually means they are ones from the earlier years of commercial farming they are more harmful and much worse for the environment. The pesticides used in normal farming uses synthetic pesticides that are less powerful, poisonous, more targeted, and break down quicker, they also cause harm in runoff …
Additionally, the lower yeild of organic produce actually further exacerbates the problems because you need 40% more land to grow the same amount of organic crop as you need for normal ones.
Another point is that only young trees absorb co2, usually the first 50 years of their life while growing. after that they expel c02, and are not helpful at all, possibly detrimental.
6. noone is justifying the dodo, im just saying that its not the most important thing … being kind and curtious to other People is much more important than saving species.
I think you’re oversimplifying the matter of waster disposal. Finding sites to store the waste where only handlers can access the area, the waste won’t leak into the soil or water supply, and won’t be disrupted by geologic activity is less than easy.
I will grant that organic farming needs much more land for crop production. I’m personally of the opinion that the world is overpopulated and that people need to be educated about zero-population growth but I know that opinion won’t fly for most frum people. I’ve tried looking up your claim about synthetic pesticides being safer but I’m not finding anything. Would you please cite where you got this information.
It’s not as if courtesy towards other people and saving animals are mutually exclusive. When other species are killed it will ultimately affect humans in one way or another.
nuclear waste can be disposed of … the way it is sealed i would have no problem if it was sitting outside my front yard. Watch this footage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1nvRBk4W3o
I saw the stuff about organic pesticides on a tv show on HBO called Penn & Teller: BS … and they recently showed an episode about organics, its extremely funny …. and enlightening, you might like it. Just by doing a quick google I see the EPA site saying
http://www.epa.gov/oecaagct/torg.html
“Organically grown” food is food grown and processed using no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Pesticides derived from natural sources (such as biological pesticides) may be used in producing organically grown food.”
I agree with “totally with you” regarding nuclear power. Nuclear power does generate a small amount of waste, and we do need to figure out what to do with it. But currently most of our electricity is generated through coal. Burning coal produces mercury & other toxic pollutants; coal mining devastates the environment.
But I don’t agree with your assertion that older trees expel CO2. What is your source for this?
anon for this, ive just dont research about the expulsion of co2 ….
basically, during the day photosynthesis absorbs c02 and creates o2, but during the night this reverses, likewise in the winter its in reversed. The theory always was that younger trees absorb more during the day than they expel during the night and winter, whereas older trees dont.
I’m just having a look on google and it seems that its been disproven recently by more rigerous testing … so i’d like to redact that statement.
I’m all for renewable energy. What pisses me off is sheer stupidity.
Example 1) People tell you that using styrofoam plates are bad, better us glass or china and wash them. Do they ever consider how much water is wasted washing dishes, or how much energy is used to heat up the hot water tanks? What about all the soapy chmical filled water going back into our drinking water?
Example 2 ) Some stores stopped giving plastic shopping bags, others started charging for them. Clearly another way to save money while proclaiming yourself “righteous” for saving the environment. Total BS if you ask me.
I would love to see these idiots go to paperless bathrooms!
Example 2 may be A BS way to cut costs but the practice isn’t new. Grocery stores in parts of Europe have been charging for bags and cart usage for years. Most people bring their own bags or baskets to carry groceries.
Another reason not to go green… Check this out:

True American freedom , Charmin or Angel Soft….
At my former job working for a real gonif of a MO, they instituted that the company was “going green”. What this actually meant was that the thermostat was set to uncomfortable temperatures and “non-essential” light sources were turned off. Seriously. Oh, and you had to ask for copy paper and log in and log out how many you took…..but the head honcho, aka el jefe, drove around in a gas guzzling lexus suv as his “company car”…..WTF?
What’s a MO?
I mean lets face it we should be more conscientious about our earth. we are in dominion and just as a father takes care of a son so should we take care of our earth. Going green has been a Jewish idea all along. That being said. Left wing morons like Al Gore are out to make a Buck – or in his case a nobel prize.. I mean he deserves as much a nobel prize as I do.
there is so much speculation in science it is absurd, what i find funny is the fact that this year is colder in america than last year. The earth goes through cycles pure and simple. it gets hot it gets cold. period. Gobal warming does occur but much of it is planet produced. Now should we find alternatives than to dump shit everywhere and pollute the entire earth, yes, should we use biodegradable things yes. do I think that we are in tech overload, mass production overload, yes but we do have 6 billion folks to attend to. its a fine line. i hate buzz words too, but being environmentally sound is a mitzvah.
I think what Heshy is saying is not that he is tired of people who care for the earth but he is tired of the pretentious retarded attitudes some carry with it. i mean someone mentioned AT&T- asking if they want to Go Green? i worked for AT&T sell their yellowpages advertising, and they wastes SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much paper its obscene. they are as environmentaly sound as any other major capitalistic enterprise, the only green they love is Money. that is the stuff i hate, they truthfuly could care less about the environment they use Green as a marketing ploy.
I hate the LEFT the RIGHT and the MIDDLE’s stance on pretty much everything.i think i hate america as it is now, though i love americans. I must say i am not very patriotic, in a country as corrupt as ours is. Now I know, anywhere else is just as corrupt i am not one who thinks France is any better, but i hate how this country acts like it is the beacon of all things great, and yet our congressmen are getting busted left and right with hookers and lobbyists.
all the pretention and hypocracy gets to me. the Left wants your money just like the right, and the guys that are in the muddle, they want to please everyone. Obama acts Churchy in a Church and muslim in a mosk, I hate politics and the Bullshit that is dished to us on TV.
all i hear about is healthcare reform and the thing is its about Damn time. having privateering institutions running the show that get richer the sicker you are is absurd. i don’t get it what the fuss is about. so what you have to take care of the poor, its your job to do so, i will gladly pay more in taxes because it is not my money anyway its hashems. “Gold and silver are Mine”. every single debate out there is very farcockted, and i tell you the truth either way they go beit healthcare or oil pollution etc, its all going to be for the “Green” and i don’t mean mother nature…
The more i think of all this stuff and how stupid we are i want to scream, it frusterates me to no end. the People that really get into the Politics of this Country as if it is real- like democrats are good republicans are bad or vice versa are the same people that think Pro Wrestling is real.
Wow and wait until I really tell you folks what I meant, I think that green is the latest buzzword – what happened to Global Warming? Now its called climate change – what happened to the oil crisis? What happened to the Ozone layer hole or acid rain or deforestation of the Amazon? Seems like every few years they change their mind. Anyone remember El Nino?
When I hear El Nino I think of the movie Mafia when Jay Mohr’s character comes out of the bathroom after looking for a gun in the toilet tank, soaking and explains to the mobsters that he’s wet from El Nino. : -) I think about an month ago that El Nino is going to happen again this winter.
I think going green is great- i do join those commenters who hate the corporations who claim they are trying to go paperless to help the encvironment- clearly they could give a crap about the environment. Its the mooleh stupid.
I’m all for it. My carbon foot print is really low too and I do basically everything paperless.
In fact- at work we have a department dedicated entirely to giving back to the envoirnment. We have our printer setting set at “two sided” – which means if we don’t want double sided paper, we have to manually change the preferences. Hardly anyone changes the setting (or knows how to), so there is a ton of paper being saved. The company ALSO replants trees at their headquarters to make up for the paper we used. I think it’s insanely awesome.
Chaya your printer that you speak of what is the toner made from? I’ll bet it’s not soy based and more than likely carbon based. So much for going green there. Some stated mandate how to dispose of laser toners because they are toxic
Alright debbie downer, quit hatin. At least she’s doing something.
The world was created for man/woman to use. We were commanded not to destroy it. Jewish greenies interpret this to mean that we must save the trees and the whales. This is a great misconception. If man/woman gets inherent benefit from destroying trees, then by definition this is not considered a destructive action.
I had this stupid teacher who refused to print out our syllabus (for ~200 people) because it would save 3 freakin trees.
Besides, who really believes that we will “run out” of resources?
My view is that I’ll go green as long as it doesn’t inconvenience me – I’ll put a soda can in the recycling bin – but if I have to waste an extra 30 seconds to walk over to the recycling – its just not worth it. Time is so much more of a precious resource to waste – that we do run out of.
By the way, interesting blog/website you have here (I’m new).
Can anyone even explain what the hell a “carbon footprint” means?
Chaya,
If you do everything paperless, how do you wipe your ass?
To all the rest of you tree huggers, every time a tree is cut down, a new one is planted. It’s how lumber producers ensure a steady supply.
Phil that was way too funny
Jeez, the meaning of paperless is describing an absence of paper; relating to keeping of records and communicating without paper. Usually electronically.
Don’t undermine my comments with your elementry school behavior.
I thought you might use the 3 shell system of the future that they had in demolition man… Just kidding. After all, this site is supposed to be about humor.
Haven’t you heard green is the new red. If you want Jews to get behind socialism you can’t use such an immodest color like red! It works out quite well because as our president said we are a Muslim country so people are trying to make them feel at home with all the green. Also you need to have a way to hide socialism because after all these years Jews have learned that socialism never works out for us… Germany Russia etc.
Also have you noticed that “going green” means that the “green” in your pocket is “going” away?
Well people voted change… so they got it Soviet Red turns to Environmental Green
My favorite go green is when a waterbottle company made the bottles smaller in an effort to “use less plastic” What they forgot to mention was that it saves them money.
Whoopsie.. guess they missed that one…
Monsey will never go green. iIs it not ironic, the more trees in a town, the less people care about polluting the place?
