Help my brother open a Moishe House in Boulder Colorado

by Heshy Fried on September 15, 2009 · 16 comments

My brother wants to open a Moishe House in Boulder, Colorado – so he made this video as part of the application process, I just hope they don’t deduct points for being religious. From what I understand the only fully kosher Moishe House in the country is in Portland, Oregon – I know this only because my brother wanted to set me up with the founder.

Don’t know what a Moishe House is?

In January, 2006, Moishe House opened its first house in Oakland, California, with four Jewish friends who were all excited by the idea of creating a vibrant Jewish community out of their own home. Since opening its first house, Moishe House now has 27 houses in 8 countries that serve as hubs for the young adult Jewish community with an emphasis on ages 21-30. Moishe House provides a rent subsidy and a program budget for a handful of young, eager, innovative Jews to live in and create their vision of an ideal Jewish communal space.

Each house is unique in its programming and personality. The programming offered in each house includes social service programs, religious opportunities, inter-cultural dialogue, book clubs, Yiddish classes, outdoor adventures, and much more. Each Moishe House hosts between 50 and 300 young Jewish adults each month. The programming of each house is shared through the online Moishe House community as well as through annual retreats for Moishe House residents. Programs are evaluated by national Moishe House staff at the beginning of each month.

I lived in student cooperatives for a few years while I was in college. It can be a really good place to live, a really great and amazing experience, if the right people are involved. It would be a wonderful thing if he were able to found a Moishe house that was actually kosher. Here in Madison, Wisconsin, we have a Jewish student cooperative, Ofek Shalom, but I’m not sure if they have a kosher kitchen. But there was a modern orthodox guy living there for a while, so maybe they were.

Yes, Chabad has both campus and non-campus houses here (though of course the students don’t live there). There is also JEMM, which is not officially Aish but is run by people who went to their yeshivas.

The Moishe House in Silver Spring Maryland also keeps a strictly kosher kitchen, and plans their events so no Jew would have trouble attending/participating because of shabbos or kashrut observance.

Moishe House Vienna is run by yeshiva bochers and associated with a strictly Orthodox synagogue. Moishe House London is vegetarian, has regular religious events and keeps shomer shabbat. Moishe House Boston is founded/organized by a rabbinical student and has strong links with Hebrew College rabbinical school.

The houses are diverse – really depends on the people who live there and run them. I’m sure they’d be delighted to get an application from your brother. Good luck!
