Hineni,

Makes a lot of sense to blame the victim, in this case Orthodox Judaism is the victim of assimilation. Unfortunately, Yetzer Hara is strong, and causes many to stumble and transgress. This has been going on the Torah was given, you can read of many OTD cases in Tanach.

Frum Jews, such as the readers of this blog, believe in Halacha leMoshe miSinai, aka the oral Torah. Most Jewish customs such as tefillin are based on it. When Moshe and Joseph married converts, they did so before the Torah was given, so I couldn;t tell you wether they did mikvah or not. To say the least, they weren't obligated to do anything.

And while I'm not blaiming reform for all assimilation, it has more than it's fair share. In countries were reform was non existent, Jews that weren't interested simply didn't observe. But when they wanted to participate in any religion, it was always done properly. Reform has misled and cheated millions of Jews and would be Jews, selling them a pile of BS, loosely based on the truth.

To a frum person, the reform movement is the ultimate in OTD, as well as hypocrisy and self destructivness.

As for you statistics, how many reforms married outside the faith this month? How many invalid/fake conversions? How many ate non kosher or desecrated Shabbat?

How many of these transgressors think they did nothing wrong because of the approval/blessing of your charlatan, so called rabbis?

What Phil is too self-righteous to recognize is that the all-or-nothing approach he espouses is what has driven Jews away -- many to secularism, or assimilation, or even chas v'chalila, other religions. But some have asked what Judaism is really about -- is it about tzitzit and waiting six hours after eating meat before drinking milk -- all the Torah said was don't boil a kid in its mother's milk? Or is it about caring for the widow and the orphan, and loving one's fellow as one's self?

The participants in this discussion have been abusive about women rabbis. What do they have to say about rabbis who are arrested for money-laundering schemes or for sexual abuse? They imveigh against those Reform rabbis who officiate at marriages where one member of the couple is not Jewish, while they forget that Joseph and Moses both married out -- in fact, Moses;s father-in-law was a priest of a foreign religion. We have no knowledge of Ruth ever going to a mikvah or before a beit din, and yet her descendant is slated to be the Moshiach? Give me a break!

I realize that I am writing on a blog called Frum Satire -- and maybe I am too dense to know the difference between the frum and the satire. But much of what I have read in this discussion that purports to be frum has nothing to do with any kind of Judaism that I want anything to do with -- or that millions of other Jews want anything to do with.

Don't blame Reform Judaism for the fact that your product has proven unpalatable to 80% of the Jews who have been exposed to it. Why not share the statistics -- how many of your guys went OTD this month?

Hineni,

What the reform movement did sounds eerily close to what jesus did and what you are preaching is identical to what the early christians said in regards to religion. Only the cross is missing.

Then, over the centuries, they slaughtered millions of Jews in the name of their religion, all along claiming that theirs is the religion of love.

The refrom movement has done the same on a spiritual level, it offered something easier and more attractive to unknowing or otherwise uninterested Jews, while destroying their true Jewish identities by performing interfaith marriages.

The movement is in large part responsible for the vast amount of assimilated Jews, the majority of which will be lost forever. Talk about people that need to repent.

You've made the crusaders and inquistors very proud, much to the shame of the millions that died under torture because they refused to accept what your movement preaches.

In regard to converts, orthodox jews pray for the wellbeing of TRUE converts 3 times a day in the amidah, our most important prayer. Most orthodox Jews have no problem marrying them or their descendants, I know many that have done so.

Phil has it wrong, as usual. The movement did not reform authentic Judaism to suit its needs. Enough Jews found their needs weren't being satisfied by the Judaism that was being practiced around them that they made reforms. The quantity of Jews that liked those reforms were what made it a movement. Over a period of 200 years, enough Jews have found that chumratic Judaism was not the way they chose to have their relationships with God that the movement away from what Phil calls authentic Judaism and what I call cultic Judaism hasn't been just a movement, it's been a stampede.

Meanwhile, any stranger that came into this discussion would draw some very definite conclusions about Orthodox Judaism. He would find that Orthodox Jews believe they have the only valid knowledge of what God wants from the Jewish people, that they express their faith through dirty mouths, lascivious thoughts, sinat chinam, crude insults, loshon horoh, ignorant statements, conclusions drawn without evidence, and the list goes on.

I kind of like the analogy someone made about the similarity between saying Reformed instead of Reform with saying Democrat instead of Democratic. The difference is that the people who use Democrat as an adjective are making a conscious if fatuous effort to be insulting, while Reformed is generally just a sign of ignorance.

This discussion should probably continue to use Reformed, because that would be consistent with the generally ignorant standard of the conversation.

Chris, don't worry about someday having an "authentic" Orthodox conversion. They won't let your kids marry their kids anyway. But you wouldn;t want your kids marrying into the seventeenth century anyway.

The good news is that we're entering the season of repentance. Not that I think any of the potty-mouths in this discussion are going to repent of their chilul hashem in so totally disrespecting others who were also created b'tzelem elohim.

ML,

Actually I never noticed anyone pointing it out, you're the first. Either way makes no difference to me. For all I care they can call themselves Jews for intermarriage, Jews for breaking Shabbat, Jews for gays or even Jews for jesus.

The movement reformed authentic Judaism to suit their needs, that's the bottom line.

Phil,

You seem like a guy that could eventually learn that it's the Reform movement. Reform, not reformed. I see that it's been pointed out to you a few times but you seem to enjoy getting it wrong.

It reminds me of right-wingers who constantly use the phrase "democrat party" when it's always and clearly been the democratic party.

Like Benjamin, I got here from the tablet, and frankly, the quality of the discussion, the ignorance displayed, the loshon hora exhibited, makes me ashamed to be identified as part of the same religious group as the people who have posted here.

Ask yourselves where the people who populate Reform and Conservative synagogues came from. We are refugees from the Orthodox world, who are much more concerned with the moral and ethical message of Torah than with which rav got paid off to say the treyf coming out of Postville was kosher.

Your freedom to create your own ghetto societies was accomplished by Jews who participated fully in American life and fought for your right to be Jewish your way, even as they elected to be Jewish in a different way.

Fact is, we know more about you than you know about us -- we know about Postville, we know about your rabbis that molest children, that have bar mitzvah parties in the jail-house. So don't go all tzaddik on us -- your conversation here betrays your hypocrisy, intolerance, ignorance, narishkeit, not to mention your foul mouths and foul minds.
