So Rabbi – please explain again about why the Jews used to do animal sacrifices to the alter (and still say prayers about that every saturday and every holiday) and how that is different from paegans? And the sacrificial lamb sacrifice? You have a lot of explaining to do.

You got to love our religion it has things for every group.

As you mention the OCD and Peasch; but there is more…

The anorexic will love Kepor
The alcoholic will love Purim
The arsonist will love Hanukah
The insomniac will love Shavout
The chronically depressed will love the 17th of Tammuz until the 9th of Av

Aspies love negiah and mechitzah- it’s just too bad we can’t each carry around a little individual mechitzah! But all the extra clothes make us feel nice and safe.
We also love the fact that you can never stop learning. And to be knowledgeable in Judaism involves learning at least three extra languages.

What, no one is going to answer the evil son?

Pagans worshiped animals like sheep and cows. For example, Hindus still do consider cows sacred.

The offerings in the Holy Temple took these icons of idol worship and killed them, to show that they are not sacred nor do they have any spiritual power separate from the one and only deity.

Most of the meat was also consumed by the kohanim, high priests, since they were not allowed to own land, they couldn’t grow crops and earn an independent livelihood, the rest of the Israelites gave about 2% of their crops to the kohanim, as well as certain pieces of regular meat, and much of the offered meat in the Temple.

What’s the problem with Paganism? Judaism like virtually all over cultures and religions has borrowed the best elements of indigious cultures and made them holy by incorporating them in to their own religous practice. This is what Judaism has donne and still does. Paganism has just one missing componant, that all the gods are ONE with the ONE God YHVH. It is just a question of focus. On the parts or on the whole. Judaism believes it has found that balance.

Certainly Judaism has borrowed some things from other religions BUT we were told so many times to have NOTHING to do with the detestable practices of other around us. That’s why many of our particular ways of worship and life arose in the wilderness. .

Max K wrote ” all the gods are ONE with the ONE God YHVH.”

I guess that’s a nice idea but remember that when Moshe went to Pharaoah and said that G-d had commanded him etc etc .. Pharaoah just said “Which god?” The Egyptians had a god for every little thing .. they looked like frogs or were to protect the Nile or were to keep the ground fertile or keep the rain and sun at the right times .. you know every one of the 10 Plagues were a deliberate action against the so-called gods of Egypt.

I didn’t mean to go on too long, just to say that I am a little concerned when we think that other gods are at one with YHVH.. as Jeremiah quotes: “I AM the L-rd and I do not give my glory to another” [3:19 .. and other places.

I kind of worry about the idea of G-d being rather like any other god..

My thoughts, hope I don’t offend other posters. Good shabbes.
