Great post. Very interesting.
It’s fair when an individual desires to increase his or her personal observance. But when a small group wants to impose religious restrictions on the rest – call that “Islamisation of Judaism”.

Wow! Someone has finally explained to me the background anthropology behind those Modern Orthodox couples who sit on dates in Starbucks drinking coffee, while enviously looking at the baked goods which don’t carry Hashgacha. The saddest part about the Machmir movement for me is how we re-write history and ignore the dual identities of our parents and grandparents who in their era, lived less strictly. At the Dati Kibbutz in Israel where I learned Hebrew, women always used to wear pants and they never had separate swimming hours, until the 1980s. But things change… It’s not always a bad thing, but I find the re-writing of history dogmatic and creepy. We should acknowledge that 2 generations ago, Orthodox men had to work in NY on Saturdays to support their families. They don’t need to anymore, but we should be honest about our heritage.
