There was an article this week in the Jewish press that talked about the new Kosher Subway in Brooklyn. It stated that this Subway is unlike the one in Cleveland in that it will not be serving mock bacon or soy cheese products and they also stated that they were 100% orthodox. I was offended by this, is this implying that although the Cleveland 100% kosher Subway is not 100% orthodox due to its trying to recreate the original Subway menu? I found this statement to be a 100% orthodox restaurant very disturbing and want to know what you thought about that. By the way I have yet to see a sushi place that does not have mock crab on its menu.

Do you have a link to the article?
BTW, the Subway in Brooklyn isnt anything special. Essex does a better deli sandwitch.
And did you ever see any gedolim eating sushi?
@a23
i hope you’re kidding
A week ago, I may have been kidding. But actually, it may be very soon that some Rabbis will have some things to say about sushi. (Hint- it will involve the seaweed)
Seaweed you say?
What could be the problem with seaweed? Some kind of bug situation?
I agree about essex having better sandwiches. I went to the subway on ave j and it was really bland. I used to go to the nonkosher subway before I became religious and the real stuff is far superior.
Re: Seaweed,
I think they wanted to ban “weed” and they thought in the yiddishe kop manner that when the guy said “See Weed ,do u see the weed rabbi ?” and so they banned the seaweed!
And that my friend……is the chumra of the month!
Dont be smoking that sea-weed. You know sushi and weed could go together because you have to roll it uplike a joint. Ah chock one up for the chumra of the month club.

Re: essex vs. Subway, after talking with many of my non-Jewish friends, they’ve all agreed that in general, Subway is a blah restaurant, barely different than any other fast food restaurant like Burger King. So when you compare it to an upscale place like Essex, of course Essex is going to win out.
Look Subway cannot even be considered a restaurant. It is fast food that is healthy thats it. Furthermore the reason it wasmade kosher is because its easy to keep the menu and use the branding and such.
Lotsof folks are complain8ing of its poor quality Vs. high cost- go to Subsational- way better and cheaper. The good thing about Subway is that hopefully other chains will start realizing the potential and maybe some KFC or Burger Kings will open up- unless the Charedim get in on the deal. Ah they love those chumra’s.
if you wanna compare subway to another kosher fast food joint, ‘subsationanal’ 2 blocks away will be more accurate. Subway is extremely cheap on their portions with just ‘regular’ taste. Subsational is a million times better, cheaper, and more generous with their portions.
Ok we all knew prior to the opening of Subway that Subsational is and still retains its title as the best restaurant in NYC.
No one has answered my question as of yet. Doesnt it disturb you that the Brooklyn Subway claims to be more orthodox then the Cleveland one. It is Frummer Than Though Attitude in your face, and its very offensive. Put away the fact you didnt succumb to the Jared marketing campaign. Please I need some response to the Jewish Press article- that is linked to upstairs.
So what is new? Being Frummmer sells, just like sex sells.
As far as the point of “100% orthodox” it makes complete sense. The place in Cleveland is owned by a Goy the one in NY is owned by a Heb. Many communities wont even give a Goy a hashgacha for a fleishig restaurant and limit them to milchig or pareve. This is a known issue. Dont get so bent out of shape over a statement like that. I’m surprised its flying in a right-wing community like Cleveland. I would’ve definitely thought that the vaad over there would prohibit it.
Cunilingus over here is speaking the truth. Have Jewish ownership does clearly make the Brooklyn branch of Subway a more reliable place to eat hence making the “Orthodox percentage” higher. Doesn’t exactly take take brain surgery to figure this out. You know what seems to be even cooler than being frummer than the next guy these days? Having condenscending dialogue about everyone is trying to be frummer than everyone else. Stop kvetching you silly Kikes.
So what your saying Mr. Kip Winger is that a restaurant can in fact be orthodox or non-orthodox which further splits apart the community. I think its BS that a 100% glatt restaurant that everyone holds by- even Telse Yeshiva can be considered not orthodox- it sounds oxymoronic.
It also makes people think of restaurants not in kasharus levels but in orthodoxy levels. What you said about Jews owning fleishig I happen to know as being wrong. Plenty of non-Jews own fleshig restaurants.
It seems that when Jews-own the place its more suspicious than if not- since Jews these days with all the kasharut scandals are the ones out to fool everyone. Whens the last time we heard about a non-Jew serving treife food?
“Having condenscending dialogue about everyone “is” trying to be frummer than everyone else.”
Why don’t you learn how to write proper english, ya dumb horse?
Ya got me there Jacob
Hey this is blogging no need for propper English. If there was a need I would not be getting 800 hits day. My spelling and grammer suck. Its about the content baby.
what did i say? it’s all my damn uptight NYC brethren.
so i know i’m a little late for the input, but since i’m seeing this for the first time now, i’m sure others are too, with 600 hits a day and all : p
the cleveland subway is owned by two jews, one is MODERN orthodox, the other is yeshivish (mo). i know them both
i might add, the cleveland subway is claimed to have lubavitch shechita meat, does that make it more ‘orthodox’ than the ny subway??
LOL…. judgements…. comparisons of jewishness… what crap!!!
based on the skewed perspective of the JP article, and the basis for their conclusion, the cleveland subway is definitely more orthodox.
or does the lubavitch shechita automatically make it less orthodox? ROFL
i’ll leave the satire department to the author.
i might add hesh,
i stumbled on your site while doing a search for torah to download to my blackberry, and lo and behold your site showed up at the top of the list… this peaked my curiousity, what blog would come up #1 for a blackberry siddur tanya search, well… jewish nyc girls with blackberries and bluetooth, tanya on your date for points, and no artscroll siddur in sight by lubabs!!! the first post i read was, the best/worst about lubabs, you had me there. i started reading further. well, that was thursday night, its saturday night, i am almost done reading every post & comment. I LOVE IT!!! and i dont read blogs, or much at all for that matter, and i dont think i will either, but this could not be passed up on, from making the most insane, funny, and the most boring, interesting, you have a writing ability that captures the imagination, and portays your actual perspective to the t.
just sharing some well deserved props.
GET A JOB!!! writing!!!
its great to see another uneducated intelligent mastermind, with skills that demonstrate true genious cannot be taught, and either way i think education merely tarnishes it.
keep up the blatant honesty, and keep showing the love
LUBAVITCH GIRLS ROCK!!!!!
Well it happens to be that I am well educated and graduated with high honors from university so I guess the uneducated part will have to be thrown out….
I also happen to be very well read and travel quiet a bit and talk to many random people. My interests are varied and I would attribute my “mastermind” as you say to my independent upbringing forcing me to day dream a lot.
So I should have followd up and maybe I will- that in the very back of the JP some 4 weeks later was a lost and not very clear article that apologized for the original article about this. It stated that they were wrong yada yada yada. By the way many people will not eat Lubavitcher schita- well because snaggies suck- Especially satmir- But I know many Lubavitchers that will not eat Satmir schita- so the hypocrisy goes both ways. Thanks for the compliment and keep commenting. I get lots of hits but rare is the comment.
Let’s cut the crap. If Jewish ownership is a legal issue that defines kashrut, please present the sources. The rest is just useless commentary. If you don’t mind, I’d prefer a more Talmudic approach to this subject. Throwing a bunch of modern pilpul doesn’t help.
le morais is owned by a non-jew-so whats the problem-they are probably more respectful of kashrut than most jews–and there is a mashgiach on premises-so what more to say? unless lashon hara is one’s forte. ALSO–Why is anyone giving any kovod to anyone with cunnilingus (Konigsberg) as part of theyre identity? Yup–it’s a sick world and getting sicker especially when supposedly frum people act and speak like they were raised in a toilet
Its funny Menachem, because in the last few years there have been numerous cases of Jews selling treife to Jews- rarely does this happen when non-Jews own the places.
